Green day has sold over 70 million albums and receiver five Grammy awards!
Green Day is definitely one of the biggest rock bands in the the world and their punk sound together with mainstream audience have taken the band to paths carved out by Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Green Day was brought to life by two childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocal) and Mike Dirnt (bass guitar) from Berkeley, North Carolina, who formed their first band Sweet Children at the age of 14. By 1989 the band´s line-up was completed with drummer Al Sobrante and the to-be rock group was named Green Day. Debut EP „1000 hours“ was released the same year and the punk scene received it verty well. In 1991, Lookout! Records released the first album „Out Slappy Hour“. Soon after that, Green Day parted ways with Al Sobrante and Tre Cool (born Frank Edwin Wright, III) became the drummer.
The underground success of Green Day´s second album „Kerplunk“ (1992) led to several big record companies becoming interested in the band. Green Day subsequently signed with Reprise Records, releasing its first major album „Dookie“ on 28.01.1994. Thanks to the support of MTV and its audience, the album became a huge hit and „Basket Case“, the second single off „Dookie“ spent five weeks on top of American Modern Rock chart. In the beginning of 1995, the fourth single „When I Come Around“ spent seven weeks on the top position of the AMR chart. By that time „Dookie“ had been sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. „Dookie“ also brought the band its first Grammy award as Best Alternative Performance.
In the spring of 1996, Green Day cancelled their ongoing European tour, saying that they are exhausted. Rest of the year was spent resting and writing new material. The result of this „off-time“ was album „Nimrod“. Critics seemed to especially like the fact that Green Day had more or less abandoned its traditional punk roots with „Nimrod“ and headed on to their own direction.
Year 2000 saw the fourth album „Warning“ making its way to the fourth position in the U.S. album chart. Although several years of touring followed, Green Day still had enough time to work on the next album. „American Idiot“ was released on september 27th, 2004 and it took the top position of Billboard 200 chart by storm.
In 2005, Green Day was nominated for several Grammy awards and “American Idiot” received the award for best rock album. In august, Green Day received seven awards at the MTV Video Music Awards, six of them for the video for hit single “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”. The video was awarded as video of the year, best group video, best rock video and also received trophies for direction, editing and cinematography.
The second video “American Idiot” was awarded the viewers choice award.
In February of 2006 “Boulevard of Broken Drreams” was awarded the Best Recording award at the annual Grammy award ceremony. At Brit Awards Green Day was awarded as the best foreign band and best album by a foreign arist.
Album “21st Century Breakdown” was recorded with producer Butch Vig (his most well-noted work is definitely the legendary Nirvana album “Nevermind”). Right after its release in May 2009, the album shot right to the top of UK album chart.
