“If anyone had told me a few years ago that I would write an opera for Cairo, I would have said he was mad,” wrote Verdi in 1870. Nevertheless, the madness became reality and the Egyptian viceroy Ismael Pasha commissioned an opera from Verdi, who was at the height of his career. “Aida” combines the elements of Grand Opèra and the magnificence of Egyptian pharaohs, powerful and gripping melodies as well as a passionate love story.

Egyptians are at war with the Ethiopians. Radames, the leader of Egyptian armies, is in love with a war prisoner, the Ethiopan princess Aida, who has to choose between the love for her country or her love for Radames. The daughter of the pharaoh, Amneris, is also in love with Radames. As a punishment for his forbidden love, Radames is claimed a traitor and enclosed in his forefathers’ tomb.

Stage director Tobias Kratzer: „Verdi’s masterpiece „Aida“ is a suspenseful thriller of love and betrayal. It is as close to the splendours of Grand Opèra as it is to the psychological depths of Henrik Ibsen. “Aida” is probably most famous for the Triumphal March that welcomes Radames back from war as a winner – slaves and elephants included. But being a chamber piece at heart, the opera’s “ancient Egyptian setting” turns out to be less a real location than a symbol for the states of mind of its characters: their phantasies of magnificence, their military vigour, their love being larger than life.“
