The SWR Symphony Orchestra, a modern music orchestra of wide international influence, was founded in 1945 and stands out as a productive and quality performer, orderer, and premiering group even in Germany, the Mecca of symphony orchestras. The orchestra participates in the opera and concert programme of the renowned Schwetzinger Festival. While Sir Roger Norrington as the principal conductor, the orchestra gained great knowledge of historical performance practices. The SWR Symphony Orchestra has had also many other distinguished conductors, such as Sergiu Celibidache, Sir Neville Marriner, and Georges Prêtre.
One of the great Russian conductors, Vassily Sinaisky conquered the heights of the musical world by winning a gold medal at the Karajan Competition at the age of 26 (1973). Since then and until today he has had countless performances in front of renowned orchestras around the world, as well as positions as a principal conductor (incl. the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre) and principal guest conductor (BBC Philharmonic).
The Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta is one of the most fascinating and unique younger generation soloists in the international concert swirl. “Wit, aristocratic poise and elegance; mercurial shifts of mood, intensity and lightness of touch in near-miraculous balance,“ describes the Glasgow Herald. Gramophone’s 2010 Young Artist of the Year and Echo Klassik’s 2012 Instrumentalist of the Year.
