Queen Elizabeth I loves the Count of Leicester but she suspects that the latter is actually in love with Maria, Queen of Scotland. Rivalry between two women in politics as well as in love cannot possibly have a happy ending.
“Maria Stuarda” premiered in Milano at La Scala in 1835. It took 123 years for the opera to be staged again but then it stayed for good and became a permanent part of opera theatre repertoires.
