Werther is hopelessly in love with the beautiful Charlotte, who returns his affection. However, because of a promise she made to her dying mother, the girl marries another man and Werther commits suicide.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther was published in 1774.
The deeply romantic story of a young poet was a sensation and became one of the most read books of the time. The highly popular novel even influenced fashion – young men throughout Europe tried to emulate Werther’s style of clothing. Alas, this success had a less pleasant side to it, as many young men also committed suicide in the same way as Werther.
