Johann Sebastian Bach’s the Goldbergi Variations stands as a monumental pillar of Western music, serving as an enduring wellspring of inspiration across generations. While conceived for the harpsichord, the work is frequently performed on modern keyboard instruments today. Framed by its iconic opening and closing aria, the composition unfolds into thirty distinct variations. Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s transcription for string trio demands immense technical skill, weaving rigorous counterpoint, dance-like lightness, and brilliant virtuosity into a tapestry of deep meditation and nuanced dialogue between the players. 

While the keyboard version often highlights the soloist's technical command, the string trio setting uncovers a more human, vocal dimension of Bach’s polyphony.

Intriguingly, the Goldberg Variations opens and closes with the exact same musical theme, symbolizing an endless cycle of life. Lore has it that the piece was commissioned by Count Hermann Karl von Keyserling, the Russian ambassador to the electoral court of Saxony. Seeking a remedy for his insomnia, the Count requested music from Bach to be performed by his young court musician, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. Musicologists have since uncovered a myriad of numerical patterns and symbols within the score, rendering this masterpiece one of the most thoroughly analyzed compositions in existence. 

This performance presents an exceptional roster of musicians: Hans Christian Aavik and Marcel Johannes Kits have both secured top honors at prestigious international competitions, while Liisa Randalu performs regularly with leading ensembles in Germany.
