Having lost both of his parents at a young age, Joost channeled his grief into creativity from the very beginning. “The internet was the only way out,” he recalled. “When my father died, the first thing I did was make 20,000 videos for YouTube with silly dance moves.” That digital origin story eventually gave rise to a discography that refuses to conform, and a fanbase that now spans the globe.

2026 marks a milestone: Joost becomes the first Dutch-language artist to perform at Coachella and headline a world tour spanning South America, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe (and more to come). His shows are relentless. His performances push boundaries and leave audiences breathless.

While the artist’s chaotic visuals and abrasive beats often raise eyebrows, his deeper message resonates with a generation raised online. “I think stubbornness is necessary in art,” he told The Guardian in 2025. “You gotta feel your fuel – or else there’s no purpose to it all.”

Klein’s breakout hit “Friesenjung” topped charts in Germany in 2023, and in 2024 his Eurovision entry “Europapa” – a tribute to his late father and a celebration of open borders – became a viral anthem despite (or because of) his controversial disqualification from the contest. As he later remarked, “People tell me, ‘Oh, this disqualification was actually really good for you, because your career got so big.’ But if all I cared about was a career, I would actually make listenable music… I make what I want to hear.”
