MOZART'S SOUL-STIRRING "REQUIEM" IN SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT ON PALM SUNDAY
On Palm Sunday, March 29, a performance of Mozart's "Requiem" in chamber arrangement will take place at St. John's Church in Tallinn. Mozart's final work, "Requiem", is considered one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of classical music.
The soloists will be an Estonian star quartet – Elina Nechayeva, Aule Urb, Anto Õnnis, and Alvar Tiisler and Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta under the baton of conductor Andres Mustonen. The concert is held under the auspices of the Klaaspärlimäng Festival.
Andres Mustonen arrangement of the "Requiem" dates back a quarter of century. In this form, the work has been performed only a few times. "It was a gigantic challenge," Mustonen reminisces about working on the "Requiem". "The four soloists also sing the choral parts themselves – it is a very demanding and complex task, but since we have four such names on
stage, the result will certainly be extremely sublime," Mustonen added.
One of the most famous vocal-symphonic works in the classical canon, the "Requiem" was written by Mozart in Vienna in 1791. In a dramatic coincidence of events, the composer himself died while composing the work. Numerous theories and legends have arisen around the death of the genius, the most famous portraying Mozart's contemporary, composer Antonio Salieri, as a jealous rival and his alleged poisoner. The "Requiem" was completed the following year by Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Thus, the piece is surrounded by a mystical aura and is often perceived as if the composer had written the music for his own farewell.
Mozart's "Requiem" was used to an especially powerful and soul-rending effect by Miloš Forman in his 1984 Hollywood film "Amadeus". The film, which portrays the composer's tragically short life, won eight Academy Awards at the time.
