The end of the year is a time for reflection and looking ahead. It was in this spirit of anticipation that Johann Sebastian Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos were composed, reflecting the composer’s desire for a new and more stable direction in his life.
Bach met Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt in Berlin in 1719, where the music-loving nobleman invited him to submit some compositions. Seizing the opportunity, Bach compiled a six-part manuscript intended to serve as a formal job application. Unfortunately, the Margrave lacked the skilled musicians required to perform the pieces, and following his death, the manuscript was sold at auction for mere pennies. Bach never received a response or payment for this musical CV.
Today, the Brandenburg Concertos are regarded as a pinnacle of Baroque instrumental music.
In collaboration with the Tallinn Philharmonic Society
Duration: appr. 1 h (no intermission)
