Bowie x Sukita x PoCo
In October, the PoCo Art Museum will open its seasonal autumn exhibition for the very first time, bringing together pop art and the history of photography. Iconic Japanese photographer Masayoshi Sukita’s solo exhibition on pop music legend David Bowie is coming to Estonia for the first time.
This is a visual journey spanning more than 100 photographs, showcasing the four-decade-long creative partnership between David Bowie and Japanese photographer Masayoshi Sukita. The exhibition arrives in Tallinn from Gothenburg, the previous stop on its European tour, and is now being shown to the local audience for the first time.
Masayoshi Sukita came into contact with David Bowie in a rather unusual way: he didn’t speak English, and Bowie didn’t speak Japanese. But in 1972, upon seeing a poster of Bowie on a London street, he knew immediately that he had to photograph this person. What was supposed to be a single session turned into an influential collaboration that lasted four decades.
Sukita followed Bowie around the world—from press conferences in Tokyo to studio sessions in Berlin, the streets of Kyoto, and concert stages in New York. This friendship brought together two curious minds: Sukita was fascinated by Western culture, while Bowie was fascinated by the East. The result was a series of photographs that are not merely images of the artist, but a documentary series of two worlds discovering one another.
David Bowie (1947–2016) wasn’t just a musician—he was a cultural trailblazer across generations. From Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke, from the Berlin Trilogy to Blackstar, he reshaped the norms of identity in ways that continued to influence pop art for decades. His albums were visual manifestos just as much as his music.
For the first time, a major traveling exhibition is on view at PoCo, and visitors can also explore PoCo’s permanent exhibition, which has been completely revamped.
The exhibition opens its doors on the 9th of October 2026. Sukita x Bowie will remain open until April 25, 2027.
