Noblessneri Valukoda, Nobel Hall (Peetri Str. 10, Tallinn)
STARS IN THE NAMIBIAN DESERT
Namibian Folk Ensemble, artistic director Perminus Matiure
The organisers of the Orient festival have carried out several cultural expeditions to Africa and invited African artists (Damara, Shona, Mossi, Berber) to perform in the Baltics since 2007. On another trip, they “discovered” a folk group from Namibia, led by Perminus Matiure, a musician and ethno-musicologist of Zimbabwean origin.
The programme of this concert includes songs and dances of the Bantu peoples and ethnic groups (Oshiwambo, Owambo, Tswana, Kavango) living in Namibia. The songs and dances are accompanied by exotic folk instruments, such as the mbira “of the ancestral spirits”, nyunga-nyunga or “sparkling” mbira, chipendani (“mouth-bow”), as well as various traditional drums and rattles. You can also hear polyphonic makwaira choral singing, which combines the traditions of the Black Continent with gospel-influenced church songs. As interludes, storytellers and attractive hip-shakers will perform.
It is perhaps not too much to add that all this is a “real”, authentic show, not adapted to European taste.
