H-BLOCKX
German rock band H-Blockx to perform in Tallinn in March
H-Blockx, one of Germany’s most prominent alternative rock and metal bands of the 1990s, is coming to Estonia this spring. On 11 March, fans at Tallinn’s Helitehas club will be able to hear “Risin’ High,” “Move,” “Little Girl,” and many other H-Blockx hits. The band is not returning merely to celebrate the past: this year, following a 14-year hiatus, H-Blockx released a new album, “FILLIN_THE_BLANK.” Tickets are available from Piletilevi.
The story of H-Blockx began in Münster in the early 1990s, and the band achieved its major breakthrough in 1994 following the release of its debut album, “Time to Move.” By combining alternative rock and metal with elements of rap, H-Blockx established itself as a distinctive force on the heavier side of alternative music, while the music videos for “Risin’ High” and “Move” received airplay on MTV.
“Time to Move” became the band’s major commercial breakthrough, remaining on the German albums chart for an impressive 62 weeks and selling more than 750,000 copies worldwide. In 1995, H-Blockx was nominated for Best New Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Over the course of more than three decades, H-Blockx has released the albums “Discover My Soul,” “Fly Eyes,” “Get in the Ring,” “No Excuses,” “Open Letter to a Friend,” and “HBLX,” toured throughout Europe, and cemented its status as one of Germany’s best-known alternative rock and rap-metal bands.
Today’s H-Blockx, however, has no intention of relying solely on its 1990s legacy. In 2024, the band embarked on a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of its debut album, “Time to Move,” and revisiting those early songs provided the impetus for creating new music.
“It became clear to me what the new H-Blockx album needed to sound like: we had to return to our own DNA, to our essence,” recalls drummer and producer Steddy.
The result was “FILLIN_THE_BLANK,” released in March 2026-the band’s first studio album in 14 years. On the record, H-Blockx returns to the elements that became its trademark: powerful guitar riffs, a fusion of rock, metal, and rap, and memorable choruses-all brought into a contemporary soundscape.
The comeback has not gone unnoticed by fans: “FILLIN_THE_BLANK” reached No. 3 on the German albums chart, the highest chart position of H-Blockx’s career. The album opens with “STRAIGHT_OUTTA_NOWHERE,” which was first released in 2025. According to the band’s singer, Henning Wehland, the song’s title perfectly captures the feeling surrounding the band’s return:
“Just like when we made our debut and seemed to appear out of nowhere, it feels the same way again now. Perhaps people do not expect much from a band after such a long silence. For us, however, everything feels just as intense as it did at the very beginning. This song conveys that feeling.”
The band and its longtime listeners have even described the new record as “the band’s second debut album.” While making “FILLIN_THE_BLANK,” H-Blockx stopped trying to meet external expectations and returned to the intuitive creative process that had carried the band from the very beginning.
In addition to the album’s tremendous musical energy, it also contains some of the most personal lyrics in H-Blockx’s history. Henning Wehland speaks openly about addiction and recovery, guilt, insecurity, and beginning a new chapter in his life. These themes emerge especially clearly in the songs “LIGHTS_OUT,” “COME_CLEAN,” and “DESPERADO.”
“I think the key to the entire process was that, this time, nobody from outside interfered. We focused on ourselves more than ever before. The goal was simply to make something that every member of the band genuinely liked. And I firmly believe that listeners can feel that energy too,” says Steddy.
“FILLIN_THE_BLANK” sounds like a return to the band’s roots without attempting to recreate the past-the energy of H-Blockx in the early 1990s meets a contemporary sound. More than three decades after “Time to Move,” the band is back onstage with new music and the same intensity with which its story first began.
H-Blockx will perform at Tallinn’s Helitehas club on 11 March. Tickets are available from Piletilevi.
