110818 / Veronika kaksikelu
Two women, two young lives – one in Poland, the other in France. Weronika, a gifted singer with an extraordinary voice, and Véronique, a music teacher, have never met, yet they look uncannily alike and share an inexplicable bond. Véronique senses the moment of Weronika’s death, abandons her own singing ambitions and later discovers her doppelgänger in a photograph taken on a trip to Kraków. Meanwhile, she is drawn into an enigmatic psychological game orchestrated by Alexandre, a charming children’s author and puppeteer.
“The Double Life of Véronique” marked Krzysztof Kieślowski’s international breakthrough, bridging “Dekalog” and the “Three Colours” trilogy that soon followed. Having begun as a documentary filmmaker, Kieślowski here turns from the tangible realities of everyday life in Poland towards the metaphysics of chance, choice, identity and unseen connections. He suggests rather than explains: reflections, panes of glass and doubled images, Sławomir Idziak’s golden-green light and Zbigniew Preisner’s hypnotic score create a world governed more by intuition and feeling than by logic. The two women can also be read as an image of Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall – divided, yet connected by history, tentatively drawing together again, as past, present and future bleed through one another like the layers of a palimpsest.
Hauntingly beautiful and quietly painful.
