“God of Carnage” — Yasmina Reza
 
Two neighboring boys get into a fight in the courtyard. One knocks out a couple of the other boy’s teeth with a stick. Their parents — two successful, well-mannered, educated couples — meet in the living room of one family to settle the conflict peacefully and like adults. Their civility lasts only so long.
 
In a little over an hour, coffee gives way to rum, politeness to open warfare, and the respectable adults turn before the audience’s eyes into the very same kind of fighters whose interests they came to defend. Alliances within and between the couples collapse and reform — men against women, the well-mannered against the cynical, idealists against pragmatists — while everything civilization usually keeps carefully hidden rises to the surface.
 
“God of Carnage” is one of Yasmina Reza’s most celebrated plays. It has been staged around the world and won the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway. In 2011, Roman Polanski directed the film “Carnage”, based on the play and starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.
 
The Geneva production returns to the same material, but brings a new cast and a new perspective to the stage.
 
ABOUT THE PREMIERE
 
The production will premiere in Geneva at the end of April 2027, after which it will embark on a European tour.
 
DIRECTORS
 
Elena Khazanova is a director, screenwriter and producer, born in Moscow and living and working in Switzerland since 1989. She is the creator of more than ten feature films, television series and documentary projects produced in Switzerland and Russia. Her successful and notable projects include “Mistresses” (2019) and “One Breath” (2020).
 
Georges Guerreiro is a director, actor and playwright who has worked on the Swiss stage for more than thirty years — from Shakespeare to Chekhov, from Pinter to Brecht. In 2016, Guerreiro first staged “God of Carnage” in Geneva at the Théâtre de l'Orangerie. The production successfully toured French-speaking Switzerland and was presented at an international theatre biennale in Moscow.
 
CAST
 
Alexander Kuznetsov is a stage and screen actor and a graduate of the directing department of RATI-GITIS, where he studied in the workshop of Kamenkovich and Krymov. He is one of the prominent figures of the new generation of Russian cinema, with leading roles in “The Scythian” and “Heart of Parma”, an appearance in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise as Helmut in “The Secrets of Dumbledore”, and the Oleg Yankovsky Prize at Kinotavr.
 
Maria Mashkova is a stage and screen actress who worked with the Lenkom Theatre company. She became widely known for her role as Maria Tropinkina in the television series “Not Born Beautiful”; her filmography also includes “Closed Spaces”, “Escape from Moskvabad” and other projects.
 
Artur Smolyaninov is a stage and screen actor who performed for many years with Moscow’s Sovremennik Theatre. He made his film debut at the age of 14 in Valery Priyomykhov’s “Who, If Not Us” and became widely known for his role as Lyutyy in Fyodor Bondarchuk’s “The 9th Company”.
 
Maria Shalaeva is an actress and director known as one of the notable figures of Russian auteur cinema. She is the recipient of the Nika Award and a Kinotavr prize for her role in Anna Melikyan’s “Mermaid”, which was submitted by Russia for consideration for the Academy Award. Her other works include “Nirvana”, “I’ll Be Around” and “Demons”.

Yasmina Reza is one of the world’s most frequently performed contemporary French-language playwrights, the author of “Art” and “God of Carnage”, and the recipient of a Tony Award and numerous international theatre awards. Her plays are distinguished by a precise, merciless and very funny look at what lies behind the façade of prosperity and good manners.
 
Our production brings the full humor and irony embedded in the play to the foreground, turning tragedy into tragicomedy while preserving the work’s original depth. Through the use of cinematic techniques, we aim to make the production fresh, sharp and contemporary.
