"“Let the Kannel Ring Far and Wide!”
Discover the enchanting sounds of Estonian folk music through the kannel (pronounced approximately KAHN-nel), Estonia’s traditional plucked string instrument, accompanying songs, dances and stories for centuries.
A decade of musical heritage
The Kaarli Kannel Ensemble brings this rich musical heritage to life, blending traditional Estonian melodies with contemporary arrangements. Founded in 2016 by musician and teacher Astrid Nõlvak as an extracurricular group at Kaarli School in Estonia, the ensemble has performed at festivals, folk dance events and private concerts over the past decade. Its collaborations have included Swedish folk musician Daniel Wikslund, violinist Karmen Kääramees and bansuri player Krista Citra Joonas. To celebrate ten years of music-making, the ensemble has released an album, Helise, kannel (“Let the Kannel Ring”), featuring traditional tunes from Estonia and beyond, arranged by Astrid Nõlvak.

Bridging generations.
For this Kaarli Church concert and its Australian concert tour, the ensemble will be joined by Krista Citra Joonas and two young musicians: a kannel player studying under Astrid at Rae Music School and a violinist from VHK Music School. Bringing together musicians from different generations, this special collaboration celebrates the enduring love of Estonian music and the traditions that connect people across time and cultures.

What you will hear.
The concert will feature an inviting mix of sounds, including different types of kannel, violin, guitar, jaw harp (yes, jaw harp, you read that right! It’s a real musical instrument and a traditional part of Estonian folk music), Estonian bagpipe and bansuri, a traditional Indian bamboo flute. Audiences can enjoy instrumental music, songs and, if the spirit moves them, even join for a few verses!

More than a concert, “Let the Kannel Ring Far and Wide!” is an invitation to discover Estonia through its music. We warmly welcome everyone to join us for this special musical journey!"
