FCI AGILITY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2021 / Päevapilet 23.09 (10.09.20 asendus)

Th 23/09/2021 08:00
Tondiraba jäähall, Tallinn

Dear reader,

I hope this mail will find all of you and your family in good health.

The whole world is seriously influenced by the Covid-19 virus pandemic. Nevertheless the Estonian Kennel Union and the 2021 FCI Agility World Championship organizing team has continued with preparation to welcome participants and spectators from all over the world to Tallinn, Estonia.

The situation worldwide changed dramatically in March 2020. We were very sorry to postpone AWC 2020. We were optimistic and hoped for news of the situation improving this year, but unfortunately this is not the case. Almost all European countries have some kind of restrictions for competitions and travelling. In many countries the agility competitions have been not allowed since last fall. There are also restrictions for dog training or it is not allowed indoors at all.

The Criteria for qualification for the FCI Agility World Championship differs in each country. Normally the qualification is based upon some tournament or a series of tournaments. For all of the countries it is impossible to complete them now and we even do not know at this moment if they can be held at all.

Most of the teams that would come to the FCI World Championship are without proper training and tournaments practice. We also see that some countries are stricter in quarantine than others, this doesn’t provide fair conditions for all possible participants.

The countries are vaccinating their population against Covid-19. Those are first real steps toward normal conditions. But any new Covid-19 version could invoke new restrictions.

Taking into account all of the above mentioned the organizing team and Estonian Kennel Union have decided that Estonian Kennel Union will not host the FCI Agility World Championship 2021.

I hope you all will agree with our decision that in the present situation we cannot host FCI Agility World Championship that is worthy of its name.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and we hope to see you all safe and healthy soon.

FCI Agility World Championship 2021

Agility is a fun, exciting and widely popular dog sport, in which handler directs dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. During the course the handler cannot touch the dog, nor the obstacles. The goal is to complete the course without faults and as fast as possible.

The main focus of agility is on the seamless cooperation and communication between the handler and dog.

An agility course, normally navigated in around 30-60 seconds, consists of 15-22 obstacles, and the order of obstacles varies on each competition course.

For creating a course, the judge has to follow a strict set of rules. In order to memorize the order of obstacles and plan their handling strategy, handlers have a couple minutes before the start of the competition to walk the course through without their dogs.

A course navigated incorrectly leads to a disqualification, while exceeding the time allowed, or any mistakes made on the course incur penalty points. The dog-handler team navigating the course with least amount of penalties with the fastest time is the winner.

The roots of the sport go back to England and the year 1978, when the idea largely based on equestrian show jumping, from where it quickly spread all over the world. Today, as well as being an interesting hobby, agility is a competition sport, with competitions held from the level of local clubs to both national and International competitions. Internationally, the top competitions are the World Championship and the European Open. The first World Championship in Agility was held in year 1996 in Switzerland.

In Estonia, agility has steadily grown in popularity since its introduction in 1991, with the first competitions held in 2002. First Estonians took part of the World Championship in 2004 and the first Estonian Championship was held in 2007.

In Estonia the World Championship is held first time. Agility is a truly gripping sport, entertaining to watch also for spectators new to world of agility. A World Championship is a large and hugely popular event, bringing together around 500 competitors, a support personnel of around 400 and 4,000 fans from all over the world. The competition will be held through four days and in order to get the maximum emotions all four days have to be attended. The dogs will compete in mini, midi and maxi classes. Additionally, a video livestream of the event attracts an additional 30,000 spectators from all around the world.
