Fauré. „Requiem“ in D minor op. 48
For this profound vocal-symphonic concert marking Holy Week, Latvian conductor Aivis Greters has crafted a thoughtfully cohesive programme. Four musical works from different eras and distinct musical lineages converge within a shared spiritual sanctuary, reflecting the core narrative of Good Friday—grief, quietude, light, and redemption.
While requiem settings by Verdi or Mozart focus heavily on the terrors of Judgment Day, Fauré envisioned his requiem as a source of solace and serenity, famously describing it as a lullaby of death. By omitting the traditional Dies irae (Day of Wrath) and concluding instead with In Paradisum (In Paradise), the composer emphasizes eternal peace. The work’s celebrated soprano solo, Pie Jesu, has got an independent life as a concert number.
In cooperation with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra
Duration: appr. 1 h 50 min (with intermission)
