Bach's masterpiece St John Passion will be performed at Kaarli church on Palm Sunday

J. S. Bach's oratorio St John Passion will be performed on Palm Sunday, March 25th. More than 300 performers – three choirs, a symphony orchestra and soloists – will appear before the audience at Kaarli church.

The passion – one of the most remarkable pieces in classical music history – will be performed by Tallinn Boys´ Choir, All-Estonian Choral Choir, Voces Musicales and Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta. The passion also requires five soloists and maestro Andres Mustonen will be conducting them all.

"Bach's St John Passion is a mystical, exceptionally deep and extremely powerful piece," said the conductor Andres Mustonen, "I believe it will become a significant event among the concerts at Estonian churches, since it is such a magnificent group of performers appearing before the audience.“

In addition to the choirs and the Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, Anto Õnnis (Evangelist, tenor), Jaanika Kuusik (soprano), Iris Oja (mezzo-soprano), Tõnis Kaumann (baritone) and Alvar Tiisler (bass) will appear as soloists.

Composed in Leipzig in 1724, the oratorio’s subject is the Passion of  Christ as told in the Gospel of John. The structure of the work falls in two halves: the first part narrates the events taking place from Jesus being betrayed by Judas until Peter denying Jesus. The second part describes Pontius Pilate’s trial, the crucifixion following it and finally the death of Jesus. The passion is traditionally performed at Good Friday Vespers.

The St John passion, conducted by the composer himself, was first performed on Good Friday, April 7 in 1724 at the St Nicholas church in Leipzig. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the Holy Week, culminating with Good Friday and Easter.

The concert in Kaarli church starts at 5 pm.
