All Souls’ Day Concert:  Mozart 265

Estonian National Opera Orchestra

On October 31, Estonian National Opera will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Maurerische Traurermusik” (Masonic Funeral Music) in C minor, K 477, Richard Wagner’s symphonic poem “Siegfried’s Idyll”, WWV 103, Cyrillus Kreek’s “Musica sacra” and Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria”.

Mozart joined the order of the freemasons at the lodge “Zur Wohltätigkeit” (Benefaction) in Vienna on December 14, 1784. In a little over a year he would achieve the status of master mason. A small number of works among Mozart’s late output was intended directly for use in Masonic lodges. The best known of Mozart’s Masonic compositions is the “Maurerische Trauermusik”, K. 477.

According to Mozart’s handwritten inventory of his music, the “Masonic Funeral Music” was written on the death of brothers Duke Georg August Mecklenburg and Count Franz Esterházy in November 1785. The instrumentation of the piece is truly masonic: it is scored for strings, two oboes, a clarinet, three basset horns, a contrabassoon and two horns, all instruments associated with freemasonry.

Their combined memorial service was given at the Lodge of Sorrows on November 17, 1785. Research suggests that an early version of the Maurerische Trauermusik was played at the induction of a new Mason at the lodge “Zur wahren Eintracht” on August 12, 1785.

The music, is dark and serious in the manner of Mozart’s Requiem. This may well reflect sentiments expressed by Mozart in his letters of the time, such as “Death, if we think about it soberly, is the true and ultimate purpose of our life. (The) image (of Death) holds nothing terrifying for me anymore; instead it holds much that is soothing and consoling!” The “Maurerische Trauermusik” is perceived as a stepping-stone between his Mass in C Minor and his Requiem.

Wagner composed the “Siegfried's Idyll” as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen. Cosima awoke to its opening melody. Wagner’s opera “Siegfried”, which was premiered in 1876, incorporates music from the “Idyll”.

“Musica sacra” is the most well-known suite for the orchestra by Kreek, based on six mixed choir pieces inspired by texts from the Bible. At the start of 1943, Olav Roots (1910–1974), the conductor of the Landessender Reval Symphony Orchestra, asked Kreek to write something for the orchestra. In one year, he wrote 30 pieces, mostly orchestrations of choral works based on folk tunes. It was written between 10 and 21 May 1943. The cycle is based on six religious songs: Psalm 137 (“By the rivers of Babylon”), Psalm 121 (“If I lift up my eyes to the hills”), “Oh Virgin, Mother of God”, Psalm 141 (“I call upon you, O Lord”), Psalm 104 (“Bless the Lord, O my soul”), “Blessed is the man”. The first performance in Tallinn took place on 1 October 1943 (conductor Olav Roots), and in Tartu on 21 October 1943 (conductor Eduard Tubin). “Musica sacra” was performed again in Tallinn only in 1989, on the occasion of the composer’s 100th birthday (conductor Arvo Volmer).
