Vocal ensemble IBERI (Georgia)
This year’s Glasperlenspiel is enriched again by a fruitful cooperation with Orient Festival, promising truly unforgettable musical experience and expanding the festival’s borders beyond Tartu. Concerts in Tartu and Saaremaa feature a unique and ancient Georgian polyphonic singing which is included to UNESCO world heritage list. The six-person vocal ensemble IBERI, taking its name from the ancient term of Georgia, Iberia, honors its homeland’s famous historic traditions in song. Started in 2012, IBERI is loved by open hearted, extroverted and cheerful stage presence. Their rich repertoire consists of work and feast songs, carols, lullabies, hymns and historical ballads from the pre-Christian era, performed with gripping intensity and virtuosity. The mood of the songs varies from dignified and dramatical to tender and playful. The improvisation as a significant part of Georgian traditional song is also important. Singing is complemented by spectacular dance elements and traditional instruments. IBERI has performed in many prestigious festivals, including WOMEX, globalFEST and Chicago World Music Festival, and has had concert tours in Europe, USA, Australia and Asia. In April 2022, the ensemble released their new album Supra dedicated to the famous Georgian feast tradition.
