CHAMBER CHOIR KOLM LINDU
CONDUCTOR MIKK ÜLEOJA

We invite you to the concerts of Chamber Choir Kolm Lindu and conductor Mikk Üleoja in March 2020! The programme is focused around the choral cycle ‘Canticle of the Sun’ by Tõnu Kõrvits, which is accompanied by chosen pieces by Pärt and Uusberg to support the intensity and freedom of the Canticle and to add to its story.

‘Something in Tõnu Kõrvits’ music speaks to me on a deeper level. Perhaps it is the remarkable landscapes. Kõrvits writes fascinating landscapes. In my opinion, ‘Moorland Elegies’ truly feels like prowling around in a vast, deserted moorland and conversing with oneself, and ‘Canticle’ even more so (even though its landscape is much more abstract). When singing or listening to it, it is easy to forget that the lyrics are a relatively short poem, for each section has its own texture, its own flavour, its own look.
Perhaps it is the fact that Kõrvits never writes naïve music. Sacred music is often naïve or at least puts emphasis on some clichéd motifs. But ‘Canticle of the Sun’ has a whole spectrum of these motifs, they have been handled sensitively and delicately, they are exceptional. Nothing is said too directly, too bluntly; the listener really has to think if they want to get somewhere.
Maybe it’s a combination of the freshness I usually sense in early music and the charge and energy present in contemporary music.
What it is, I do not know. But ‘Canticle’ is a truly unique piece.’ (Rahel, soprano)

------------
CHAMBER CHOIR KOLM LINDU is a Tartu chamber choir established in 2017. The choir enjoys musical challenges and a meaningful and demanding work process. The choir holds respect and joy towards each other and towards music in high esteem, and so, we have had inspiring collaborations with the conductor Benjamin Kirk (programme “Kui ööbik, luik ja koolibri…” (When nightingale, swan and hummingbird…)), conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve and a percussionist Vambola Krigul (programme “Creator Spiritus”). In 2018, the choir gave nine concerts and was the first musical collective in the Arvo Pärt Centre’s official concert programme (after the opening of the centre). In 2019, we gave 4 concerts with conductor Valter Soosalu: beautiful Northern music in cooperation with cellist Theodor Sink, and a Christmas concert in cooperation with violist Uku Toots and concert master Ebe Müntel. In 2020, we will collaborate with Kadri Voorand, Mikk Üleoja, Jaan-Eik Tulve, Janis Ozols and others. The choir is conducted by Valter Soosalu.
