CHOOR Mongolian Music Ensemble

Biography

CHOOR is an ethnic Mongolian ensemble based in

Beijing, China with members who grew up in the grassland

regions of Inner Mongolia. The name was Ih Tsetsn and

changed to CHOOR in 2018. Choor is a very old word in

Mongolian, meaning polyphonic, harmonic, and overlapping.

In the ancient Mongolian music, the word ‘choor’ has four

interpretations. 1, ‘Hao Lin choor’ meaning ‘choor in the

throat’, is commonly known as "Hoomei". 2, ‘Mao dun choor’,

meaning "wooden blowing in the choor", known as the

history of ‘Hu Jia’. 3, ‘Hu Lin choor’, meaning "to play the

violin choor", the Mongols known as "Choor Qin", is the

predecessor of Morinhuur. 4. ‘Amu Choor’, meaning harmony

in oral string playing. In a word, choor is generally interpreted

as a harmonious pronunciation. In terms of these terms and

classifications, the word "choor" is the Mongolian recognition

and understanding of the music world. Therefore, our band

takes the word "Choor" as its name to inherit the ancient

Mongolian music culture. At the same time, the members of

the orchestra are composed of Hoomei singer, Violin choor

player, Morinhuur player, Mao dun choor player, Tubsierqin

player, Hobbis player, String player, Long-tune singer. Choor's

concert is a feast of ancient and modern Mongolian music.

The performers were each born into herding families and,

at a young age, began their study of the Mongolian Morin

Kuur (horse-head fiddle) and other instruments from their

parents and other folk artists. In their high school years they

entered professional music schools where they received

systematic, academic training on their instruments and were

able to bring their artistry to a new level. After graduation,

they each entered careers as professional performers for arts

troupes in Inner Mongolia. For entrance into these arts

troupes, each performer needed to have mastered skills on

bowed and plucked string instruments as well as the ability to

sing Khoomi. They each went on to perform on China Central

Television and to win prizes in prestigious national and

international competitions on numerous occasions. They

represent a fresh generation of young Mongolian performers,

and combine adept musicianship with a profound musical

sensibility bestowed upon them through many years of living

on the expansive grassland. In recent years, they have

performed concerts of Mongolian music in venues such as

the Sun Yatsen Concert Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, Century

Theatre, Tianjin Concert Hall, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and

Shenzhen Concert Hall where they received rave reviews and

enthusiastic audience reception.
