Igor Moiseyev State Academic Ensemble of Popular Dance
DANCES OF THE WORLD NATIONS

In 2020, Igor Moiseyev State Academic Ensemble of Popular Dance will celebrate  its 83rd anniversary. The history of the dance company, which was established by one of the greatest figures of choreography of the 20th century and has collected a unique treasury of folk dancing culture, features the word “First”, repeatedly flashing throughout its chronicles in golden letters.

●  World’s first professional folk dance ensemble.
●  World’s first folk dance theatre.
●  World’s first dance company on a diplomatic mission for establishing transnational cultural relations on all continents.

Pioneering is the quality that predetermined the development of the imaginative genius of Igor Moiseyev, whose career started as a principal of the Bolshoi Theatre ballet company, which was also where he made his debut as a choreographer. Despite his substantial liking of and respect to the great traditions of the past which had nurtured his experience as a performer and director, Moiseyev was striving to look beyond the visible horizons and bravely tread where no man had ventured before, starting with the first steps taken on his artistic path. In his quest into the unknown, the Maestro relied on his unquenchable thirst for acquiring knowledge, an exquisite ear for music, innate sense of movement, insatiable hunger for novelty and the belief that life is a gift from great Nature. His worldview was broader than social and political constructs; his concept of the man reached beyond differences in status and daily habits; and his artistic aspirations were larger than guild-imposed ambitions. The genre Moiseyev discovered and established, the character dance genre, became the ultimate expression of his philosophy of art as the philosophy of goodness and creativity.

Transforming folklore into professional choreographic composition, which made an invaluable contribution to the preservation and development of folk traditions of numerous peoples, was a planet-wide achievement, and Igor Moiseyev was the first to have attained it. Moiseyev was a true cosmopolitan, and the dance company he had created was known as a goodwill ambassador.

The legacy of the great choreographer is a truly unique encyclopaedia of art, which today is not merely being preserved but also developed and interpreted by the new generation of the dancers of the Ensemble who graduated from world’s first school of folk dance, opened by Moiseyev in 1942. It is their enthusiasm and skills that ensure Igor Moiseyev’s flamboyant and uplifting art continues its triumphant march around the world, never ceasing to amaze and delight millions of grateful viewers.

The dance company’s touring map features more than 70 countries, and the artists have had 10–15 concerts in some of them (for example, the US, France, Germany and Hungary).

In 2011, Igor Moiseyev Ballet was awarded grand prix at Anita Bucchi, the Italian award in professional choreography.

UNESCO awarded the company with its ‘Five Continents’ medal on the occasion of 75th anniversary of Igor Moiseyev Ballet during its spectacular tour in Paris in December 2011.

Since 2015, Igor Moiseyev Ballet has been listed as a highly valuable heritage object of the nations of Russian Federation, “National Heritage of Russia”.

In 2017, the gala concert to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the dance company was held on the historical stage of the Bolshoi Theatre.

The current head of Igor Moiseyev Ballet is Elena Shcherbakova, former leading dancer of the company and holder of the title People’s Artist of Russia. The 2020 tour is organised by the Estonian Dance Agency.
