Estonian Music Days & ISCM World Music Days 2019
“Through the Forest of Songs”

Estonian Music Days 40th edition
2nd May-  10th  May 2019

Estonian Music Days will celebrate its 40th year in 2019 by bringing an international event to Estonia – World Music Days.

Every year the festival focuses on a new theme. In 2019 the theme is “Through the Forest of Songs” which is a journey of songs and stories focused on nature and choral music.

The festival is held over nine days and will take place mostly in Tallinn but also in Tartu and Laulasmaa. The concerts will take place in Tallinn, in Lennusadam, Creative Hub, Estonia Concert Hall, St. John's Church, St. Nicholas’ Church, House of the Blackheads, ERR’s First Studio, Kanuti Guild Hall; in Laulasmaa at the Arvo Pärt Center; in Tartu in St. Nicholas’ Church; Estonian National Museum and elsewhere.

New music from the following Estonian composers will be performed at the festival: Tatjana Kozlova-Johannes, Ülo Krigul, Toivo Tulev,  Helena Tulve, Elis Hallik, Margo Kõlar, Ardo Ran Varres, Age Veeroos and many others. In addition, new music from more than 50 different countries will be performed.

The works of international and Estonian composers will be performed by the best Estonian music groups: Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Vox Clamantis, Collegium Musicale, Ellerhein, Estonian National Male Choir, Estonian Police and Border Guard Orchestra, Hortus Musicus, Yxus, Ensemble U:, Una Corda and others. In addition, guest music groups from Latvia, Sweden and Finland will be performing. Distinguished musical duos and solo artists will also give performances: Kadri-Ann Sumera, Talvi Hunt, Ulla Krigul, Signe Sõmer, Vambola Krigul, Kristi Mühling, Monika Mattiesen, Laura Põldvere, Ivi Rausi, Villu Veski and many more.

Since its inception 40 years ago in 1979 the Estonian Music Days has been one of the most important festivals focusing on the work of local composers. New music from Estonian composers will be performed and the programme will encompass different genres and uniting many artistic forms.

The World New Music Days organised by the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is an annual festival of new music which has become one of the most important festivals of its kind.  Each year the festival takes place in a different country and works closely with the biggest local festival or organisation focusing on new music. In 2017 the festival took place in Vancouver, Canada; in 2018 it took place in Beijing, China and after taking place in Estonia this year the festival will travel to Christchurch and Auckland in New Zealand.

Having been an important promoter of new music around the world for almost a century, the ISCM has endorsed the works of many exceptional and innovative composers from Schoenberg, Ravel and Stravinsky to John Cage and Olivier Messiaen.

In 2014 Arvo Pärt was the first Estonian to be chosen as an honorary member of the ISCM.
Festival is organized by Estonian Composers’ Union.
