How does sound Curse Upon the Iron by a choir with 110 singers?
Five chamber choirs from Tartu come together to celebrate the anniversary of Veljo Tormis. We have been practising since the start of summer to ensure that from the joining of our many-many octets to a 110-head choir would sound a powerful piano, strongly sensed tempo, nuanced wording as much as possible.
Veljo Tormis is one of the few Estonian composers,if not the only one, who has written so much with great diversity and on different levels of choir music that almost all Estonian choirs have sung his music at least once, if not multiple times.
During these concerts, we sing all the pieces together and from the original scores. We donate the income that survives the cost to the Virtual Centre of Veljo Tormis (+ 50% of supporter tickets). As a result of our united work, we also plan to put together the Tormis statistics from Tartu choirs for the following year.
We are very excited to see you at our concerts!

INFO
INTRODUCTIONS OF CHOIRS
E STUUDIO CHAMBER CHOIR was born in 2013, when the studio's girls’ choir invited young and experienced male singers to compete with them in an international choir festival in Cork. The choir was first called E STuudio Young Choir and changed its name to the current one in 2022. The collective can be characterised by a wide dynamic range and a balanced sound. Because of that, most of their repertoire is from modern and contemporary music, but they also sing pop music arrangements. Some of their last years’ noteworthy achievements are: Grand Prix and the title of the best conductor from the Riva del Garda choir competition, the winner of the contemporary music category from Tallinn’s 2025 choir competition, performances of Tiit Kikas’ small operas, film music concerts, and Independence Day concerts in ERM.
CHAMBER CHOIR HELÜ is a collective formed over twenty years ago, and today, amongst them, sing 40 singers. In the choir are singing lovers and enthusiasts from all over Estonia. In our midst are people from Võru, Setomaa, Tartu, Tallinn, Mulgimaa, Muhu, Saaremaa, and Hiiumaa. We are a variegated but united group, which can also be seen from our different parish national clothes. During the years, we have competed in many choir competitions and festivals, both at home and outside of Estonia, and brought home every colour of medals and diplomas. Our newest achievement is CHOIR OF THE YEAR 2024 and CONDUCTOR OF THE YEAR 2024 - Küllike Joosing was also the artistic director of last year’s Tartu Song Festival. The choir's name means “voice”, or “sound” in Võru dialect.
CHAMBER CHOIR KOLM LINDU was born in 2017. Kolm Lindu enjoys a meaningful and demanding work ethic, where respect and joy towards each other and the music are fundamental. The latest season was unusually intense for the choir. Autumn started with the University of Tartu’s nature museum’s installation “Karvennustus” completion (artist Damien Beyrouthy, curator Sara Bedard-Goulet, composer Age Veeroos) and Shakespeare’s concerts with conductor Laura Štoma and Chamber Women’s Choir Sireen. In March, the dream to sing with Vox Clamantis was carried out - concerts dedicated to Arvo Pärt, conducted by Jaan-Eik Tulve. During the spring semester, the choir had a concert tour with Vanemuise’s symphony orchestra (Carl Orff Carmina Burana, conductor Risto Joost), Eller Music Schools examination concerts, Song Celebration, a concert with the Canadian women’s choir Espressa, and a performance with Nublu during the opening of Rally Estonia. The choir is led by Kärolin Tuisk.
UNIVERSITY OF TARTU CHAMBER CHOIR is an energetic student and concert choir formed in 1971, which has, throughout the years, stood out with its original endeavours - be it performances in a bog, aircraft hangar, or participating in Latvia’s Song Festival. From the chamber choir’s treasure chest are found both classical and contemporary choir music from Estonian and international composers. The University of Tartu’s Chamber Choir has been granted recognition in many prestigious choir competitions: I place in the upper mixed choirs category and two golden diplomas in the choir festival “Lisbon Sings” (2023), mixed choirs categories winnings in competitive singing “Tuljak” and Estonian Chamber Choirs Festival (2024), and mixed choirs category I place and access to Gran Prix round in the choir festival that happened during the spring in Tallinn 2025.
VOCAL CHAMBER ENSEMBLE VOX PUNT started its activity in February 2021 in Tartu. Ensemble’s conductor and artistic director is a young and talented composer, Patrik Sebastian Unt. Vox pUNT’s mission is to bring to the stage a kind of choir and chamber music that isn’t heard during choir concerts, as well as the pieces of the ensemble’s conductor, Patrik Sebastian Unt. Since there are only a few largely known and active vocal chamber collectives in the Estonian music industry, one of the aims of the ensemble is to keep this kind of group dynamic alive and further introduce it to the Estonian public. In May 2022, the ensemble stepped in front of the public with its first solo concerts, “Sinihõll”, in the House of the Blackheads and the Estonian Aviation Academy. In 2024, they recorded their first record, “Und nägin maailmast”.
