Claudio Monteverdi's 1607 composition, "Orpheus," is widely regarded as the foundational work of Italian opera and a pivotal moment in the birth of the opera genre itself. During the Baroque period, Italian opera dominated the European musical landscape, with its singers, instrumentalists, and composers highly sought after from Lisbon to St. Petersburg. France, however, developed a distinct operatic tradition, presenting the most significant counterpoint to Italian dominance.
