Two Opera Legends on One Stage: Plácido Domingo and José Carreras to Perform in Riga

On 11 June 2027, Xiaomi Arena will host one of the most significant opera concerts of recent years. Plácido Domingo and José Carreras — two extraordinary artists who have defined an entire era in the world of opera — will come together in Riga.

A grand concert programme, a symphony orchestra conducted by renowned Spanish conductor David Giménez, and a choir of more than 100 singers will make this an exceptional musical event. Xiaomi Arena will resound with celebrated operatic arias, duets and masterpieces that have become part of the golden repertoire of classical music.

The concert will offer a rare opportunity to see two members of the legendary Three Tenors together again. Their performances brought opera far beyond the walls of traditional theatres and introduced it to millions of listeners around the world.

The Concert That Changed the Perception of Opera
On 7 July 1990, on the eve of the FIFA World Cup Final, a concert took place at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome that would become one of the defining musical events of the 20th century. José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti performed together, with Zubin Mehta conducting.

The Three Tenors phenomenon was born. They combined the great operatic tradition with the energy of a major live spectacle, opening the world of classical music to millions of new listeners. The trio’s later appearances were connected with the FIFA World Cups of 1994, 1998 and 2002, while the recording of their first concert in Rome became one of the most successful classical albums of all time.

Now, two members of the legendary trio — Plácido Domingo and José Carreras — will perform together once again.

José Carreras: A Voice Like No Other
Born in Barcelona, José Carreras began his international career at a young age and soon became one of the leading tenors of his generation. Italian and French opera occupied a special place in his repertoire, particularly the works of Verdi, Puccini, Bizet and the composers of the verismo tradition.

His distinctive timbre, emotional openness and unmistakable Mediterranean warmth made his performances unique. Carreras has sung at the world’s leading opera houses and collaborated with the most distinguished singers and conductors of his time.

In 1987, at the height of his career, Carreras faced a life-changing challenge when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. After undergoing extensive treatment, he returned to the stage. In 1988, he founded the José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation, which supports medical research and assists patients in countries around the world.

The Three Tenors concert in Rome became a symbol of his return and opened a new chapter not only in the artist’s life, but also in the development of classical music.

Plácido Domingo: One of the Most Remarkable Careers in Opera
Plácido Domingo is a singer, conductor, opera administrator and mentor to young artists. For more than half a century, he has remained one of the central figures on the international music scene.

Domingo’s repertoire includes more than 150 roles — from the great tenor heroes of Verdi, Puccini and Wagner to roles written for baritone. During his career, he has appeared in more than 4,000 performances and concerts and has conducted hundreds of productions and musical events.

Domingo has led major opera institutions and founded the international Operalia competition, which has introduced an entire generation of outstanding singers to the world. His extensive discography includes complete opera recordings, solo albums, arias and duets, while his artistic achievements have been recognised with Grammy, Latin Grammy and Emmy Awards.

Two Legendary Artists Reunited
The concert in Riga will bring together two distinctive voices, two remarkable artistic personalities and two extraordinary careers united by a shared musical era.

The symphony orchestra, large choir and impressive scale of the arena will give the programme exceptional power and depth. Audiences can expect an evening in which the great operatic tradition meets the energy of live performance.

11 June 2027. Two legends. One evening. Music that has become part of world culture — and an event not to be missed.
