Lepo Sumera Concerto grosso

Concerto grosso, literally – grand concerto. This musical genre, born in the Baroque era, has inspired composers throughout the centuries with its wide range of musical possibilities. The golden fund of Estonian music also includes a few concertos grossos, whose soloist line-up was quite unconventional at the time of their creation. It is precisely the composers' wonderful ability to fill this centuries-old musical form with their own unique style and content that has made many of the works belonging to this genre enjoyable to listen to even today.
But Estonia has even more of a connection to the concerto grosso – on September 30, 1977, a very special concert took place in the auditorium of the then Tallinn Technical University, featuring the premiere performances of both Alfred Schnittke's Concerto grosso No. 1 and Arvo Pärt's Tabula rasa. The performers were Gidon Kremer and Tatjana Grindenko, orchetra conducted by Eri Klas.
The final concert in our series will take place on the 50th anniversary of the premiere of these two works, which had a profound impact on their era and the world of music – on September 30, 2027.
The opening concert of the series, on Sunday, April 19, at 5 PM in the White Hall of the Blackheads House, will feature Lepo Sumera's Concerto grosso, surrounded by the works of his teacher Veljo Tormis and his former students Galina Grigorjeva and Erkki-Sven Tüür. The opening piece of the series, the introduction or prelude, is by Pärt Uusberg.

It promises to be a wonderfully playful Estonian Music Evening.
