Jeff Mills, Jean-Phi Dary and Prabhu Edouard present: Tomorrow Comes The Harvest at Alexela Concert Hall, Tallinn
On 5th June 2024, Detroit’s electronic music pioneer Jeff Mills, French-Guyanese keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary and Indian tabla player Prabhu Edouard present an electronic afro-jazz live project Tomorrow Comes The Harvest at Alexela Concert Hall in Tallinn.
A founding member of Detroit’s legendary techno collective Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills left the group in the early nineties to continue as a solo artist. As a conceptual artist, he has often looked to Sci-Fi and Afro-Futurism as a source of inspiration – he has soundtracked silent Sci-Fi classic A Trip To The Moon and NTS’ radio adaptations of the 1960s TV series The Outer Limits in collaboration with NASA.
Mills started the Tomorrow Comes The Harvest project in 2016 with the late, great Tony Allen, one of the originators of AfroBeat, and French-Guyanese keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary. The idea was to not prepare or plan anything, but play in the moment to reach for the same understanding musically. Following the death of Allen in 2020, the group now consists of Mills, Dary and Indian tabla player Prabhu Edouard - each belonging to a long tradition of exploring the unknown by intersecting sounds and rhythm through an array of improvisational movements.
Born in France with Guyanaʼs roots, Jean-Phi Dary is a keyboard player, singer, producer, arranger and songwriter who has worked 20 years with Tony Allen, his close friend. Dary’s solo projects include African Avant Garde, an amalgamation of African instruments with electronic modular synths and keyboards.
Prabhu Edouard is an Indo-French percussionist and composer. Regarded as one of the most versatile tabla players of his generation, he is also an experienced pedagogue sharing his musical vision on various percussion masterclasses worldwide.
The night’s special guest, Estonian Maarja Nuut is an internationally acclaimed singer, violinist, electronic artist and composer whose work spans a vast range of rich musical worlds. She has delved into disparate genres, archive sounds, ethnomusicological research and the outer limits of looping and electronic sounds. Based in Zürich, her collaborator Nicolas Stocker is a sophisticated and skilled drummer and composer known for polyrhythms and “spectral” detours into melodic territories. Together, they’ll play Nuut’s new pieces that include ambient and experimental as well as jazzier and groovier material.
Tomorrow Comes The Harvest concert at the Alexela Concert Hall in Tallinn takes place on 5th June 2024. Doors open at 6 p.m., Maarja Nuut and Nicolas Stocker take the stage at 7 p.m., Tomorrow Comes The Harvest at 8 p.m.
