Christmas Jazz 2018 opening concert „9 Hymns to Freedom“

On November 28, nine ensembles of Estonian musicians will bring nine unique compositions on stage to celebrate the 100th birthday of Republic of Estonia. New works will be presented at the Christmas Jazz 2018 opening concert „9 Hymns to Freedom“. Tickets with a special price on sale only today at Piletilevi sales points.

„9 Hymns to Freedom“ is a nine-part composition by Estonian jazz composers, where every part symbolises one important event or person in the history of Estonia. Together with our best jazz musicians, the performance will also feature folk, rock, electronica and other genre musicians, together a 100 of them. The artistic director of the concert is Siim Aimla and staging director Eva Koldits.

Artistic director Siim Aimla says, that it is extraordinary to see 20 composers and jazz musicians joining their creative potential, which allows to bring completely Estonian-themed work to the audience. “The creative process is especially interesting for the musicians themselves – no pair knows what the others are writing, only the topic and line-up. Thanks to the unique pairing of the composers, we will see that the new work will be as variegated and fascinating as the history of Estonia,” said Aimla.

“”9 Hymns to Freedom” belongs to Estonia 100 (EV100) official music programme and even though the compositions are not yet completely ready, I am completely sure that if these talented musicians and composers will make it to be something wonderful,” said the  Government Office of Estonia’s head of EV100 organisation team Jaanus Rohumaa. “For the 100th birthday of Estonia, we will have 100 Estonian musicians on stage who will tell the story of our country through music and sounds.”

The authors of these nine compositions are valued jazz musicians, ensemble leaders and composers and they all have chosen interesting creative partners for themselves – Maria Faust and Kirke Karja, Kadri Voorand and Kristjan Randalu, Mingo Rajandi and Meelis Vind, Holger Marjamaa and Raun Juurikas, Mairo Marjamaa and Sander Mölder, Peedu Kass and Siim Aimla, Raul Sööt and Aleksander Paal, Joel Remmel and Paul Daniel, Tanel Ruben, Jaak Sooäär, Ivi Rausi and Laura Põldvere. Soloists will be the composers themselves or top musicians of their choosing, together with Police and Border Guard Orchestra, string quartets and choir.

“9 Hymns to Freedom” will be the opening concert of Christmas Jazz 2018 on November 28 at 7:00pm at Alexela Concert Hall. The project is a collaboration of Estonian Jazz Union and Jazzkaar. Tickets will be on sale on June 13 at 10:00am at Piletilevi sales points and web www.piletilevi.ee. The concert will be live broadcasted to Estonian Public Broadcasting television- and radio channels.
